Once a friend came to me and ask “How do I get rid of my girlfriend?” I replied “Get rid of?”. He explained that he and his Girlfriend had been not been getting along for a long time and he wanted to escape the relationship but did not know how to do so. He said that the two of them were too intertwined to break up, that they had both their names on the apartment lease, they had bought some furniture together an he went on and on about why his previous decisions had gotten him boxed in.
This reminded me of many of my consulting clients at the time how they were so stuck on “We do it like this because we have always done it like that”. I know what my friend had come to me I had been single most of my life and knew how to move from one relationship to another when the time came. This was the same reason my clients came to me is to hear what they already knew and did not want to hear.
I told my friend the best way to get rid of his girlfriend was first to go find a new one. Once he could see a new life it was easier to find a way out. In addition once he told the old girlfriend about the new one she was also motivated to make the changes.
